I can't believe what he has done now
« on: Aug 18 - 2009 »
My local has run the village gala for the past 13 years. We have all sorts of entertainment that appeals to all ages - giant bouncy slide, hook a duck, coconut shy, tombola, auction etc.

Over the last 13 years we have raised ?62,000 for the LGI Paediatric Unit (Children's Intensive Care Unit in Leeds) - which is astonishing for a small village pub.

However, I went to the pub last night and was told by a few of the other regulars that with immediate effect no bouncy castles, stalls, tombolas, etc were now allowed on the pub premises.

This is unbelievable. What is he losing out on?

1. The pub lunches are now nonexistent (if 2 meals a week are sold now, this is considered a good week!) so on gala day, the closing of the lunch trade will not effect him.
2. The takings on gala day are about 8 times what the normal Saturday take is.

The Gala only takes place once a year and may I add that it isn't the Pub Gala, but the Village Gala which is held at the pub. People who help out at the Gala are dedicated people (who happen to be regulars) who will look at this as a slap in the face for all their hard work over the years.

I could rant and rave on and on about this but I thought that I'd keep it short. The worst thing about this scenario is that the Landlord (who is the Gala Chairman) is on holiday and doesn't even know about this. I think it will be the last straw!

Most of the regulars I spoke to last night were of the same feeling and were totally disgusted as they are taking away much needed funds from needy children if the gala cannot be run from this site. Some even said that this should be taken to the press as all our galas over the last 13 years have made the local publication. But hey, what will happen is the papers will get in touch with the brewery and you know what they will say -

What will it take for Humphrey Smith to come to our pub and explain himself to the 40 odd or so helpers who give up their free time to organise and run the gala - put it this way, I don't think he would leave the pub alive! All we want to know is why?

Typically disastrous news that affects so many others.

One could be forgiven for assuming that Humphrey Smith doesn't believe in supporting children's charities. We've already heard about the plight of children being made to take undue road traffic risks, due to Humphs vetoing a safe public bridal-way / footpath. And what's so crazy - yet again he's destroying his own business.

With a permanent 'no comment' attitude from the brewery, one could be forgiven for thinking that there are no tangible reasons for such decisions.

Do these seem like the actions of a sane business man?

Having already allegedly been found 'guilty' of unfair dismissal on at least 8 accounts, you would think that the man might begin to realize that he isn't always right (if ever these days) with regards to company policy.

Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

:)There will of course, be some disappointed :'( folks as there was when SS stopped the bonfires, family days, best cellar, best garden, team sponsorships, darts KO etc. awards all in the name of  reducing costs ???.

There is a big big question of liability/insurance, for example who would be liable for the bouncy castle if it were to 'take off' as happened in the North East not to long ago. The Pub, the Manager, HS or the village? cos in my experience, it's always, always, always the manager who takes the can. ???  Pubs should indeed be at the center of the community, perhaps a polite official request should be made by the organising committee instead of just relying on hearsay and assumptions. Then you can come back and tell us all about it. ;) You never know your luck. :-*

our pub in Tad was a real local working mans pub with great characters who had come in for generations, we got a memo (as was getting nearly weekly) that there should be no gambling, fair enough, but guys who had or still do religiously go in day after day playing domino's or pool 4 a few pence/ quid being told off us basicly they cant do that anymore?? we let em get on with it. ITS A PUB!!
