The man is pure evil,he,s supposed to be a religious man going to church every week, one must believe he goes to some dark place to worship the Devil. No doubt the Hump will go scavaging around the bins of Taddy to find some left over turkey for his dinner.

I must admit it's not nice to be sacked at Christmas but we don't know all the details.

Andrew, I think we know all we need to in relation to the insensitive treatment of the landlady at the Slip Inn Milnrow and it would be good if we could let her know how we feel. May I also offer you some friendly advice at this, the festive season -please try and think of possible reaction before posting - unless of course you really do want to wind us all up!

Happy Christmas everyone - and lets hope 2010 is the year we can make some impact on SSOB management ;).

I hear the management couple have quit the Marquis of Granby at Framwellgate Moor, Durham after Hump popped in and said the OBB wasn't quite as good as the Colpitts down in the city. Another display of "Dignity at Work" in action.

I'm not sure you work for the brewery because I doubt that anyone who does will be a supporter of how the business is operated, but I imagine you have some sort of rose-tinted internet filter that prevents you seeing a wonderful company being steadily turned into a laughing stock. Remember the days when every pub proudly displayed the white rose and Samuel Smith boards? The pristine white paint, polished pumps, clean, tidy, well-run? No? well plenty of us can and find it difficult to understand what the hell is going on. If you can offer a rational explanation then I'd be delighted to hear it.

Well said! I've said plenty on here about my complete disbelief at company policy and though it has been a while since I posted on here, my disbelief has only grown. The handful of Sams pubs that I have used in the past are mere shells of their former selves, with staff going through the motions rather than enjoying their work and actively trying to attract more custom. It seems like the brewery is trying to get rid of trade rather than attract new customers or even try to keep hold of their old ones. The only thing that Sams pubs have is the price of a pint and an extremely good pint too, but increasingly they are losing huge amounts of trade through the inept food policy and the complete lack of entertainment. God help them when the world cup is on next year.
Until these things are resolved, (and numerous other issues too) Sams pubs, especially the more rural ones are going to be doomed to slowly die, kept open only by a man who has far too much money and no sense whatsoever. As for the poor souls who work for him and have to endure a constant stream of nonsensical policy making and draconian working practices, I can only feel sorry for them. Some of them are doing their very best in the circumstances to make sure their pubs are run as correctly as they can, partly I think out of a sense of loyalty to their customers and to their pubs. Mr Smith would do well to follow some of their leads rather than making their lives harder than they should be and actually hampering their ability to make their pubs the busy and vibrant hubs of the community that they should be.

Ship Inn, Milnrow

Apart from her discraceful treatment, it's odd that the wife is sacked because the pub is a husband & wife contract. A pub near me was the same, but wife couldn't stick it so left to go back to work. Husband is still there with more staff hours to cover missing wife!

Is this sex discrimination?

FFS take off those rose tinted glasses, I'll bet that the Berkley's takings are at least 40% down on those of say...2 years ago.

There are pubs that were doing 6k per week on food alone and now doing zip!!  granted these were probably few and far between, 6k on food is a lot of food but many were doing 3-4k and also doing bugger all now because of a stubborn old man who will never admit he's made some very big mistakes.

The ONLY saving grace Sams are holding on to is their policy on being the cheapest, and the fact that they actually own all of their outlets, it cannot carry on like this indefinitely, the quality of many of the people he is willing to employ at the moment tells the story and will be the downfall of Humphrey, his money is dwindling away slowly but surely...ok it may go on like this for several years yet but the situation will never improve until he admits he has gone down the wrong road for the last 4-5 years.

As previously posted by many, some of us older guys can remember when Sams was THE company to work for and were almost the envy of the brewing industry.
I sincerely hope that whatever big thing that needs to happen to change all this happens sooner rather than later.
Beware the toes you tread on today are not attached to the leg that supports the arse that you are gonna have to kiss tomorrow.

That is still the case at HQ, decent pay (good pay rise this year), excellent pension and when you reach retirement they still look after you with virtually rent free housing.
Most people I know who work there are very happy with it.

Most managers earn under the minimum rate and under the national average,so the pay is not that good !
The pension was good until they stopped final salary payments.
How many live in Sams houses with dirt cheap rent, not many, how many managers have been thrown on the streets by this madman and had to rely on family and friends to put a roof over their heads.
So it appears things are not that good Tadfan are they
