Humphrey Smith - King of the South!

Somebody has kindly contacted us to reveal the following information..

Apparently both London area Managers have now gone! One retired, and the other resigned - and taking a break before looking for new employment.

So it is alleged that Humphs has now taken over as area manager for all 44 pubs in for the Southern region".

Despite his lack of experience - he must feel that he is more capable than all of the area managers he has taken over from. The first word that comes to mind is 'deluded'.

Conversation I overheard in one of the six Sams pubs in Tadcaster the other day, that Humphrey was getting the Coastliner bus from Tadcaster to York one morning last week, to get the train to London, he offered his (pensioners) bus pass  which was refused as it was before 9.30 and guess what ? He didn't have any money on him ! Could be just local gossip but on the other hand sounds about right.

I now know for a fact MR H is visiting all southern pubs,introducing himself as their area manager. Then asking for a chat,quite cordial face to face but two days later some of the managers are receiving hand written letters telling (threatening) them that if they do not achieve the 5% surplus then he will start disciplinary proceedures against them.This man is a bully and lives in his own world. Thank god for the union.

just a thought here, as Sam Smiths area managers are normally the licence holders of the premises, is Humphrey transferring all licences to his name. If he hasn't are they still licensed and should they be open?

I know he got Linda Gibbons to sign the premises licenses when she worked for the company
If Humphrey has been prosecuted for DD would he still be able to hold a premises license??

He's running such a huge area now that it must be nearly impossible to keep up with all the legal stuff.
One other thought, with regards his demands for the 5% surplus from his southern managers (and it is a long time since I drank 'down south' so I dont know if things have changed) but it was virtually impossible to get a pint that wasnt full to the brim with virtually no head. Getting the mystical 5% under those circumstances really would be impossible.

The hump just has no idea, to southern drinkers what hes asking with the surplus is outright theft, they want the glass full,i can see empty pubs down south if hump keeps this up.They will vote with their feet and i do not blame them.

The premises licence is held by the company, The Designated Premises Supervisors (managers) have to have a Personal Licence and I'd be surprised if Hump will have bothered getting qualified and applying for one.

Lets hope the necessary licensing authorities read this site and take a look at the Sams pubs in their area
