E cigarette
« on: Mar 7 - 2010 »
I know nothing about these things but i am told these are the latest items forbidden in sam smiths pubs.it would seem you can buy a e cigarette and use it and be within the law, but the hump says you cannot use them in his pubs. the reason is managers may not be able to tell  a real fag from a fake and as a result they may cause trouble. As a none smoker as i say this is all new to me but if this is true has the hump banned something that is legal just because he can, what will this looney ban next.

I have heard this as well. For once I have to have some sympathy with the brewery. The artificial cigarettes are every realistic, and it could be difficult for managers and other customers to tell the difference from a distance.

The last thing a manager needs is for someone to light up on the basis that another customer is smoking a plastic cigarette, that's just problems for everyone.

And no I am not an anti-smoking fanatic, I smoke myself and hate the smoking ban.

The E cig is a clever device that has been on the market for quite a while, there is no grey area it perfectly leagal and safe to use in enclosed areas. The user gets the hit of nicotine and the fake smoke is created by water vapour. the difference, one is made of plastic, the other is made of paper and tobacco and does nasty s***t to your body, simple. ::)

The memo said the E cigarette is not allowed in any SS pubs, this is because in the busier pubs staff wouldn't be able to distinguish if it was a real cig or a e gig being used, so it was banned in all the pubs

And I believe that the Brewery would be in its right to ban it as well.

My take on this is,  if they where allowed in pubs then it will be something else the overworked managers would have to keep a eye open for. I have never seen one but if they do look like a real cigarette and give out "smoke" then you will always get some selfish smart a*** person  trying in on by lighting up a real one.

I must agree that the original ones were very cigarette like and were probably mistaken as real cigarettes. But over the last year they have now introduced black barrelled ones, with a blue or green led on the end. Also they have larger brown ones to as well. This makes them much easier to recognise as not cigarettes. I know a few people that have been using them for a few years now and they do look different. But i do agree that if its a busy pub then its probably easier to ban them completely.

I was in a pub in Bury yesterday and saw a E cigarette for the first time. Across the room form us a saw a man sucking on what look like a pen, but after each suck he exhaled smoke. Around 5 or 6 bar staff was in the bar at the time and just ignored him.  Must say I did think it was some kind of cigarette before my wife told me what it was.

Instead of prattin about, pubs should be allowed to  have in house smoking in a seperate room or no fags at all, I dont smoke, but killing off the pub trade is silly.

Smoking in pubs (which wasn't banned, just smoking in the work-place, which is slightly different, is just one of many things that have reduced trade in pubs.

I am totally against smoking in pubs at all.

They are not illegal, but from a staff point of view they can cause confusion.  Also, a smoker can sneak in next to an e-smoker.

I have to say that it looked very much like smoke to me. It was not white but grey and looked and acted like smoke.
