Taddys lager!
« on: Mar 9 - 2010 »
This has to be the best tasting lager currently available in the UK. And when drunk in large quantities it has been known to make a village idiot enter into a conversation with the panache of a university lecturer!

Bravo Samuel Smiths! :-*

I know what you are saying, in my local it can be flat but the glasses get the blame, but taste wise its always spot on.

It must have been altered dramatically since the last time I tasted it cos it was truly minging, and will never be a patch on the Ayingerbrau (Alpine) lager....which incidentally rumour has it that the Taddy is due to replace.

I don't understand why they have to replace it if it is as good as it is and is selling well. I don't suppose the brewery will say why they do these things.

I'd imagine it's cheaper to produce so the margins will be better.  Couldn't agree more with Taddys - it's no better than any of the mass market rice & maize-brewed euro-fizzes. Alpine actually has a decent bitter taste and if you take a good sniff it's got really good hop aroma.

I think budweiser contains rice in the ingredients but I don't understand why.

Budveiser (AB Inbev) claim that it's to give the beer a cleaner, lighter taste so I suppose they've achieved their goal because it tastes of very little indeed!  The real reason is that flaked rice is much, much cheaper than malted barley which is why most lager brewers use it and flaked maize in their mash. They give plenty of fermentable sugars allowing high alcohol content but naff all in the way of flavour. Perfect for the brand-sensitive and taste insensitive masses.

Hump, to his credit, refuses to use crap like that in any of his brews.

if they do stop selling alpine and just have taddy then that will be me out the door after 20 years and i wont be the only one, sams is not the cheapest any more, but i cant stand the taddy, and theres a lot of good lagers in some of the local pubs.

people i know will not put up with it if the alpine goes, they will vote with their feet and go somewhere else.and the hump will loose out on sales again.

The RUMOUR has it that it's more to do with the licencing issues reference the Alpine brew, cant remember the exact details but ultimately it is going to cost the brewery more to produce due to these issues, ie. they dont own the rights to use the name or the recipe.

This has been dicussed some months ago on this site, you may wish to go back and have a look...I will say however that these RUMOURS have been circulating for at least a couple of years so you would have thought that if it were true then SS would have phased out the Alpine or at least started to by now....or have they?

I have phases of sometimes several years when I alternate between drinking Lager and Beer, but I do have the palette to differentiate between Taddy and Alpine...there is a world of difference.
I am currently in "beer mode" and do truly love the OBB from the cask but alas it makes me ill, maybe the yeast...not sure.

The Sovereign bitter is a simply gorgeous drink IMHO and when kept properly beats John Smiths Smooth into a cocked hat.

While we are on the subject of beers, whats going on with the obb, at my local it takes ages to settle the head can be two inches thick and as this is the widest part of the glass theres no way a pint is in there its like its been given a dose of andrews liver salts, the landlord says its not his fault,so whos is it,is this the hump and surplus again another way of robbing the customer,if it is it does not work we all wait and insist that its topped up.

exactly right ...........beer is served with a large head but 2 inch is taking it a bit too far and this is down to who ever is pulling it.......or in could be end of barrel etc....it all comes down to the surplus targets in the end, managers just cant hit them...........because its impossible without filter back systems

Interesting comments on Beer in The evening Website about the Yorkshire Grey Langham St London W1 :Not over impressed with this Sam Smiths pub which is unusual as they are usually really well maintained. It was unwelcoming and functional and it could be such a cosy nook. The lights were too bright and harsh and the staff uncaring and gave short measure although they did top the drinks up when asked. Prefer the other Sam Smith's Dover Castle 5 mins away.
As they say in Oswaldtwistle " If you catch a weasel asleep, you can pi** in it's ear"

short measures are standard practice in my local,it seems to be a game to how much the landlord can short change you,we all no its not his fault hes just frightened for his job, and is trying to hit the humps targets,he should never be placed in such a position, humps using fear to get what he wants..
