That's an ancient practice that's completely illegal. Any employee can join any union of their choice. The problem is the union becoming recognised by the management which can be done voluntarily or a union can apply for statutory recognition but the GMB, for example, would have its work cut out just getting enough members within the company before that can even start to happen.
