Dear Humph,

Please accept my apologies for previous nasty remarks.  I have just realised  that you probably have OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).  The compulsive disorder seems to be either percentages or unreasonable targets.  Everything you do seems to be related to one of these, for example you have a fixation about getting money for the 5% of stock that is not served, your hire them fire them attitude could be related to either of the above - or a combination of both, your headstrong belief in a nearly complete turnover of managers in a very short timeline another of your percentages or targets.

Your actions are not down to money because most of the time it actually costs your company money to carry out your orders and there is a reason for everyone's action.

OCD is very  treatable.  I do hope that you have recognised this and have started on appropriate treatment.  A good website to look at is http://www.ocduk.org/1/ocd.htm

This condition is frequently caused by anxiety, possibly caused by you trying to manage too many pubs all on your own.  There are professional managers that you could employ to make your life easier but you would have to delegate some powers to them and trust them.

If you are not receiving treatment then you need to visit your GP who will refer you to the Mental Health Team.  NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines suggest that you may need to take an antidepressant and have some physcological thereapy such as CBT (Cognital Behavioural Therapy).  The NICE Guidelines can be found at http://www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/live/10976/29949/29949.pdf

I do understand how difficult it may be for you and that underneath all this strange repetitive behaviour you are a very nice caring man.  Please make sure that you do get appropriate treatment urgently.  There are managers, bar staff and customers out there who care about the survival of Samuel Smiths and long to have a great relationship with you.

The treatment does not hurt at all, you will find the antidepressants just make life a little better and the CBT will really give you strategies for gradually stopping your obsessive behaviour.

If it helps send me a PM and I'll go with you to your GP or therapist.

Wishing you a very speedy recovery leading to a profitable business and fantastic relationships with everyone.

Yours

Devastated

I've been thinking along similar lines. Look what wikipedia says about Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder:-

The primary symptoms of OCPD are a preoccupation with details, rules, lists, order, organization, and schedules; being very rigid and inflexible in their beliefs; showing perfectionism that interferes with completing a task; excessive focus on being productive with their time; being very conscientious; having inflexible morality, ethics, or values; hoarding items that may no longer have value; and a reluctance to trust a work assignment or task to someone else for fear that their standards will not be met.

MODERATOR NOTE:

Be careful that you don't state anything that is libellous nor anything that could jeopardise the future of this website and forum.

Thank you,

Personally, I think this was a good, and fair post by 'Devastated'. 'Ant', you are probably not aware that some time ago, Humphs had himself, allegedly intimated (may be in jest) that he may someday go the same way as a family member had, with a mental health issue.

The fact that Humphs approach to running the brewery has changed so dramatically over the last 7 - 10 years, in a way which an outsider could be forgiven for thinking that the breweries hostelry management strategy is now being controlled by someone completely different.

It's also understandable that people are looking for explanations as they try and understand the changes in policy which have caused so much hurt to individuals, and seriously tarnished the breweries reputation within the industry. Dare I say (and I have heard this first hand) that the current brewery policies (specifically in relation to staff) are making Humphs a laughing stock, within the industry. This is sad, as there was a time that any other company would happily employ an ex-Sams member of staff, as they had previously had a reputation for being highly trained and exceptionally proficient.

Mental health issues have always carried a stigma, and have often be the focus of ridicule. However, as high as one in three of us in the UK, will at some time suffer a varying degree of a mental health problem.

As a society, if we all acted more responsible, and caring, in trying to understand such matters, then it is more likely that individuals would get the understanding, and more importantly, the care they so much need.

With the appropriate care - peoples lives can be substantially changed for the better - and often a full 'cure' can be achieved.

Recent changes in Government policy has enabled the creation of many more facilities for assessment and administration of appropriate therapies.

A very good friend of mine, suffered in silence for many years with a form of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) - and it does come in very many forms and variants. She was eventually put on a type of anti-depressant (Seroxat) which is an 'SSRI' - Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor (allowing the increase in serotonin within the brain). Although this helped her manage things a little better - it wasn't the solution.

Eventually she managed to get assessed on the NHS, but at that time was told she would have a two year wait for CBT - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Another option was to go private - which was at that time beyond her financial means.

I'm pleased to say, she found a very successful (and affordable) alternative, which she claims has restored her 100%, to as she had been before any problems. I say 'she found', it was actually a mutual Internet savvy friend, who searched and found the solution.

I will detail it here, so that if Humphs believes it may help, or if anyone else may be having any difficulties or anxiety related problems, then not only does this solution seem very effective (and now well proven), but can also be done in ones own privacy, although a full supporting structure is also available.

This is called the Linden Method, and here are some associated links..

Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

Just to add to what has been said, possible mental health concerns have been discussed on here before and each time I think the tone has been balanced and motivated by wanting an explanation and genuine concern for a persons health and well being.

My two-penneth on this issue is slightly different in that I feel talk of OCPD may be more appropriate than OCD - the two appear to be quite different as outlined here, but each are treatable, for example by therapy such as CBT:-
