32 new Managers in Training
« on: Jul 22 - 2010 »
heard today from a manager at a Sam's pub that the brewery currently has 32 managers in training at the brewery this week. There was not enough room at the brewery so some new managers had to go to the Buckles function room for training.Anybody else heard any more about this.

Does anyone know what the training involves?  How to use a microwave, perhaps?  ;D

Spot on DB but also modules in 'coping with sleep depravation', 'performing double shifts', 'bowing and scaping to the beloved leader' & 'placating customers complaining of erosion of standards'.

Thought they also stayed in his "luxurious" accommodation.  There's nowhere like enough room - unless he's got double bunk beds in.

The "Training" only covers the absolute bare minimum.

ie, Health & Safety, Disciplinary procedures (for very obvious reasons). The cashing up and financial procedures, basic food hygiene and as far as I can recollect that about covers it.
Absolutely no cellar maintenance or even how to pull a good pint and no trip around the brewery either.

As I already held a personal licence I missed the first day so presumably that was covered first.

I think the microwave instruction was held seperately at the Sarah Brownbridge premises, I didn't attend that either as my wife was supposed to go, as it turned out she could not make it on the day so neither of us received that training but it was immaterial as we told FOB exactly where to stick his job before we ever got to start doing food.

The training is just sufficient to cover their arses and no more.
Beware the toes you tread on today are not attached to the leg that supports the arse that you are gonna have to kiss tomorrow.

Just a thought here. If 32 managers are in training I presume they will all have a premise to go to. If thats the case, are these premises therefore without managers at the moment or do they have temporary managers in or are some of his premises open without the necessary DPS in charge which means they are open illegally. I do know of one manager in York who left at midnight one Saturday and the brewery were going to stay open till a new DPS was in place until they were told  differently by the council of course!!.

I know of two that definately need managers, th Harewood Arms Folifoot as its been run by the manager at the Radcliffe Arms. Also the Emmot Arms needs a manager as it has a holding relief at the moment. Two other possible ones are the Harewood Arms Hotel and General Elliot as they both have single managers at the moment but not sure on these two.

Been told that SS should apply for a variation to the DPS even if they don't know who will be taking their place, immediately.  Failure to do so is quite serious.  My local council does spot checks on pubs for things like this and would take serious action.

From what I understand, Humph has a habit of "borrowing" a personal licence from someone.  In other words he gets existing staff to run the pub and gets an existing dps from another pub to put his name forward as the incoming dps.  He does this until he finds someone to take the pub over.  Crafty or what?...

He does usually get someone with a personal licence to act as manager but doesn't always ask for a variation.  He relies on the local authority not knowing and thus gets away with it.

Usual story.  Same as the myth he perpetuates about putting in his own relief managers who are frequently totally inexperienced, use your personal belongings without respecting them, and implying you need a personal licence holder to do it.  Have been told that for holidays and sickness it is ok for personal licence holder not to be there but it has to be with their permission because they are the one whose licence is on the line if things go wrong.

On thinking about above.  Do they all have personal licences or are managers giving permission by default?

Not being in the trade, I have no idea what all this means and especially what Humphrey should be doing to comply with the law. Does anyone have the time to explain please? I have a feeling the government is consulting on possible changes to licensing at the moment.

Cheers.

The licensing laws all changed under the Licenseing Act 2003, which came into force in 2005.  This law is also inaccurately known as "24 hour drinking".

It now means that a premises gets a license for certain activities from the local authority.  Activitities include sale of alcohol on or off the premises, games, music, refreshments, etc.  This license lasts indefinitely and does not need to be renewed every year like it did previously to 2005.  The premises license requires a named person to be on it to take overall responsibility.  This person is known as the "Designated Premises Supervisor" (or DPS) and what you and I know as The Landlord/lady.

Usually this person can only apply if they hold a personal license (PLH).  To get your personal license you need noramally to pass your level two BII personal license exam (40 multiple guess questions) <<<<WARNING, Brag alert>>>>  When I did my exam I got 40/40.  Most muppets can pass first time....mainly common sense and remembering.

A pub is normally required to have a personal license holder on the premises during opening hours, so normally more than one person employed would be a PLH.

That's a brief outline of things!

Apparently there is also the Grandfather Licence which allows one Personal Licence holder to be DPS for three pubs. There are personal licence holders for SS who are DPS for more than three pubs which is not supposed to happen.
