So, Smifhy, you like the pub, and beerbellybob doesn't? He thinks it's empty, you think it's full? Why don't you both get together for a pint and save your local? Humphrey certainly won't!

Beerbellybob must be a proper sad git, barred are you? good!!! Saturday night has been a quiet night ever since the music ban came in, regulars used to listen to the match on the radio whilst keeping up with scores on T.V.  Now they go to rival pubs to watch match on dodgy box, drink until after 5,then go home. Eston is a good pub with bloody good beer and lager and regulars who appreciate what they have got, not the place for people who think they run the place mr.merc!!!!!!

Mr. Smith, Just a thought. Given the constraints imposed on your managers and somewhat understanding the expense needed to supply all of your 400+ pubs with T.V. and music with all the licences, permits, rentals &c. Why not just supply your managers an entertainment licence and PRS licence. This would allow them to use whatever entertainment available to them at no further cost to you. One of our regulars has years of experience with discos and karaoke and a son with his own band, there are lots of locals with musical talents that  are looking for gigs to get experience. So there you go, minimal outlay, a leg up for your businesses, a help for your managers. Try it in a few pubs in an area, if it works, improvement, if it doesn't, nothing much lost. Kind regards.

You see the main attraction with most Sams pubs is the fact that they dont really attract many of the younger generation, less trouble, less of a drug problem and usually a whole lot more peaceful.

Some of us just want to enjoy a few pints in a quiet, peaceful atmosphere and perhaps talk and have a good laugh with the other customers, its been 3-4 years now since they took the music and tv's out and to be perfectly honest the only times it becomes a problem is Xmas and New Years Eve.

Most people have got Sky or whatever so they can watch the footy at home or even go to the match, so bollocks to the music ban, ban all kids too and it would be heaven, pubs should be pubs and go back to some of the old values.

I am sure some of you will disagree, but to be fair I dont really give a sh*t, its my pint and I'll have it the way I want it or I'll go somewhere else to have it, and I'll think you will find that is just whats happened at the Eston.

Why not go all the way and ban women, lets just have 2 pumps, one for bitter and one for mild, no lager, no food, red plastic seats, formica topped tables that are only level if you put a beer mat under one leg. Thats how I remember some pubs were like when I first started drinking.

Seriously, if the only customers are the old guys who want a quiet pint and a chat then Im afraid these pubs will be boarded up in 5 years. Every pub needs a supply of new customers to replace the ones who are becoming too old to get out or dying off. Ignore that and you go the way of Woolworhts!

Smifhy & Smiffy,

A good pub should cater for all - young and old alike, music lovers and those who like a quiet pint, smokers and non smokers - the list is endless. The real problem appears to be that Humphrey Smith, for whatever his reasons, seems intent on destroying his estate, treating his managers like s**t and not giving a monkey's f***about his customers. If your local Sams meets your needs, support it, and support those on this site that are trying to do the same....

it appears that the site has once again turned into a playground for disgruntled people.

what you need to do, is boycott the pub or support it. arguing the toss on an internet site is no use to anyone, least of all, the managers,

Nice one Icefire, about time somebody got to grips with what this site is all about. Personal attacks are manna from heaven for humph and fob (not worth capitals, particularly fob!!!) Get your bloody heads right, this site is dedicated to getting humph to change his ideas and help his managers, not put bigger hurdles in front of them. If you think personal attacks will help just think, new managers, probably not local, know nobody, on less money, no pension scheme, even less staff hours. Result, a pub full of s*** heads, druggies, burglars. Grow up!! Yes things need changing, but what needs changing is the companies attitude to the business. My last post would help in a little way but only if regulars get behind the management teams and stop atacking personalities.ATTACK HUMPHREY, (not physically) but in letters, in radio phone ins, in letters to the newspapers. Leave the managers alone, I really would not want to be a manager in Sams now, s*** jobs, scruffy pubs, s*** directors, cracking pint tho !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A well reasoned and structured post foreversams....

If only Humph and his minions were as clear as their beer and your post in their thinking mate...

Now the piles of dog ends outside and the dirty glasses inside the Greyhound, Altham, that's another story for another time....

I think the fag ends are a minor problem, it takes all the hours the Managers have just to run the business never mind sweeping outside. I personally know 8 Sams managers, they all use the hours they have for staff to keep
the customers happy and clean the pub themselves! WTF? Why can't humph have the same thought for his bread and butter?

I guess you are a smoker forever sams?
A minor problem forever sams????

Unfortunately this is the unacceptable legacy of the smoking ban where the smokers are just too lazy or indifferent to their effect on the locale or the environment.
Any littering is unacceptable but landlords should be ensuring that smokers are given the opportunity to dispose of their rubbish responsibly. Cigarette ends are particularly tricky to clean up as they fall into grates and cracks in the pavement. They also contain toxins which, if left, can get into the water system posing a threat to the environment and wildlife.
Notwithstanding all that the Greyhound is on a well used pedestrian route for two of Hyndburn's Senior schools and one asks " What message or example does this detrius send to the youth of today?"

Sorry Jetta, the point I was making was the managers time not the actual fag ends! Yes I am a smoker, but I'm not outside the pub every ten minutes, I might go out once in two hours and you are right when you say that the company should be providing for the smokers. I, personaly, do not throw my fag ends on the ground, I put them in a nearby bin. I just wish that other smokers behaved as responsibly. But!!!! All this is detracting from the main point of the site, please stop nitpicking at posts all of you. Let us all get organised, leave personalities out, just give humph, fob and not forgetting oliver a bloody hard time!

totally agree with your last post, there are too many people getting on to this website who just want to have a go at anything, lets just put some things into context, the brewery have decided to make their own food and to sell it through there own outlets, if it is cooked properley and served well, the food is no better and no worse than food served at other pub groups. Some of the decisions the brewery have made do work and lets face it Sams isnt closing pubs down, the main problem with Sams is the way the managers are being treated and the ridiculous slashing of staff hours, which is putting a tremendous burden both physically and mentally on managers, and this is the problem that the unions are trying to deal with.
