Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

I'm not an expert on weights and measures regulations but I would of thought that if you served any less than a pint and waited until the customer asked for it to be topped up, you could get caught out if you get a visit from W&M.

Any views?

Yes I do get a surplus on my stocks what I need to know is tax paid on these,we are re-selling what should have been sold.If tax is not due on these why?
Think of my last surplus in excess of ?500 that ale is still on the property waiting to be re-sold,the tax man surely wants his cut,or am I missing the point.

You are quite right tax should be paid on surplus stock but throw this into the mix aswell.
Duty is paid by the brewery for all beer that leaves there we all know that there is nearly allways 37 gallon in a 36 gallon barrel, no duty is paid on this either it just goes to the surplus (or staff party if you have any staff).
The same goes with getting an extra shot of wine or spirit out of a bottle, I've never measured one but I would hazzard a guess that there is a tiny bit more than the stated measure in each one.
If this is the case, you see why Humphrey is so upset when deficits are produced as he can not admit to helping you achieve a surplus in the first place.
