Having had a moan in the past about the infamous 'ping pie' - I thought it only fair that I posted this good news!!!

One of my previous concerns about the nuked pies - was that they were not a suitable lunchtime snack - just a pie meal - and at a price. However, I've just noticed a sign going up at my local 'Nellies' (aka - White Horse Inn, Beverley) listing some new food items - which I have been told are official Sam Smiths additions to the existing menu!!!

Well - having a like for burgers - yes 'burger and chips' now on the menu - I decided to give it a try. And wow!!! Fantastic!!! What a pleasant surprise.

With the speed it was served, I assume it was nuked in the microwave, and so wasn't I expecting much - but it was lovely. It also had a good amount of fresh crunchy salad in it (which may be just down to the venue). Now I'll admit to being a big McDonald's fan - which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea. But McDonald's has already proved it's success through popularity.

All I can say is - look out McDonald's, you've got a serious challenge on!!! I know where my next burger is coming from - and better still - I can enjoy a refreshing pint of Sam's Sovereign with it. Yummy, yummy!!!

These are sad times :(

And 'passedit' - I suppose you've actually tried one of the Sams burgers - have you??? If not, don't you think you should keep your opinions to yourself - until you are in a position to give a truthful response?

If you had properly read my post (and other posts) you would ascertain that I've had just as much to complain about - as anyone else. But unless you are one of those nasty people who will 'have a go' just for the sake of it - then you should be familiar with the term 'credit where it's due'.!!!

A lot of bad things have happened at Sams of late - and those it has hit most, has be the managers and customers - so if something positive does come along, that will help the managers - then don't destroy it!!! What ever your culinary preferences - it is a matter of FACT, that many paying customers, do enjoy a burger. If you don't, then - that's up to you. If you think a microwave burger, sounds like a bad idea - well you're not alone - so did I. BUT I found out for myself, that it tasted bloody lovely - which means either by accident or design (or maybe bowing to some of the pressure from managers) that my local's manager (at least) has now got some extra food trade back!!!

So 'passedit' - before you further destroy our local's managers trade - I hope you know exactly what you are talking about!!!

AND finally - you have implied that by enjoying a microwave meal, that 'I am not normal' - I wonder if you would have the balls to say that to me and a few of my friends - to our faces? In fact, what normal person would suggest that a vast proportion of the population are not normal - simply because they have eaten some microwaved food!!! I suppose 'passedit' you don't own a microwave then? >:( >:( >:(

Most pub grub meals these days are frozen. Does anyone actually believe that large chains such as beefeater, wetherspoons etc could put on such an extensive menu if it wasn't frozen. All the mixed grills, steaks etc come straight from the freezer. Sorry if this disillusions some of you but thats how it is. Unless you've been in catering in some way you wouldn't believe what comes out of a freezer.
Good on you minsterman for speaking up, not tried them yet like the saying goes .the proof of the pudding is in the eating. or don't knock it til you tried it. ::)

I would like to have a meet, have you the b**ls or should it be burgers.

Steady on lads and lasses. I love a nice local squabble as much as the next man. Trouble is, whilst we're having a go at each other, we're in danger of forgetting who the common enemy is!

Minsterman please accept my apologies if you were upset by my posting...

Yes of course I do.  :)

I was just trying to post something which I believed was a genuine positive - and hoping it would help support our pub managers much needed food custom.

Interestingly enough, I was told that one possible reason for the change in the food regime, could be partly exacerbated by a recent tightening up in food and health & hygiene regs. - which require more tracking paperwork and temperature probe records. Who know's - someone might have been food poisoned, due to a lack of hygiene, due to a mistake in the kitchen. Not that we would ever hear about it. But could it be possible that the idea is to try and reduce the risk of breaking the latest regs., and keeping the kitchen routine standardized so that you are not relying just on the chef, who may unexpectedly phone in sick?

Of course, in the absense of any answers from the brewery - who know's?

If like other businesses, they kept their management and staff in the loop, and kept them informed, then just maybe the company could win back a little of the loyalty and respect it lost.
These are sad times :(

Dear minsterman, with ref your latest post, regarding yummy food, this change in food policy has nothing to do with hygeine regs being tightened, in fact the change over of managers means that most of the people thrown into his pubs do not even have a basic food hygeine certificate, in fact the whole training program has gone out of the window, i dont know what happened to checks by the enviromental health, but if they go to sam smiths pubs they will find not only that the staff are not trained but that the food in the freezers is going out of date, i know one manager who will lose ?500 in stock in the next month because the food is not moving, and who will get the blame the manager of course because the smiths need a fall guy for their incompetent managment of what used to be a fantastic company

that can be achieved by joining as a member at this site.

Always in support of the Samuel Smiths Brewery - although very concerned about the current company strategy towards its staff and customers, as exercised by the Directors. We believe in promoting common sense, decency, compassion, fairness and compliance with company, employment and English law.

I believe that Sam Smiths is selling good food at reasonable prices.  Obviously it may not be as nutrituous as preparing food from scratch, but then I do not expect that I would eat every single thing I consume from a Sam Smith's pub.

What I do expect is to feel full and satisfied when I have eaten a meal I have purchased from any venue whether it be Maccy D's Sam Smiths or Weatherspoons, and as a former employee I am fully aware of the amount of frozen food that was formerly on the menu even ten years ago.

Although I would really like a sandwich with a pint of beer every now and again in a Sams Smith pub if Humphrey is reading this.

MinsterMan - you are one of the lucky ones. I was very happy to have bumped in to the duo running your local when they did a relief in Follifoot. They are very worthy of the praise you give them. Please send on my regards next time you have a burger!

It would appear that the inevitable has come to pass. Anyone with half abrain could have predicted the demise of the much vaunted (by some) ping pie menu! Could this be the beginning of a new era in which Sam Smiths as a company are seeing the world in the same light as the rest of us? I for one hope that this is just the first step towards bringing the whole of the estate into the 21st century, cutting the ties that have bound the hands of hard working staff and encouraging them to excel rather than forcing them to submit to a hidebound regime that should have been outdated when Adam was a lad.
Anyhow, let's be grateful for small mercies, and hope for the sake of all concerned that in the face of this monumental climbdown, that the humble pie that certain parties will be forced to eat is more tasty and better value for money than "ping" pie.
